On Friday, November 17, CHOI Yoonsuk’s VJing performance Study 1981 Live Set will take place in the exhibition space beginning at 7:30 PM. The performance layers images and video over the artist’s live DJ set.

Through the editing, overlapping, connecting, and dispersing of sounds (ambience and music released in 1981) and fragments of imagery, CHOI Yoonsuk conjures the landscape of December 19, 1981 — the day before he was born — into the exhibition space, inviting audiences to briefly sense a time and place beyond the reach of personal experience.

“Looking back, I find that I have always been in a state of reflection. I suppose I am searching in the past for clues to the problems I face in the present and future. And yet, even as I look to the past, I cannot let go of the belief that somewhere in those earlier times there must have been a decisive answer — despite the fact that I keep arriving at more or less the same decisions when it comes to life and art.
